Hi All
On the 18th of April the theatre is having a small opening night. We are showing a film in the main hall as well as a live orchestra and some other music and entainment. The idea of this night is to celebrate the achievements so far, but there is still a long way to go if the project is to be an outright success. If you would like to come to the evening and support us you can buy a ticket just drop me a line or pop in to the theatre. Adrian

19/3/12
Come to our music night this coming Friday at the Grand theatre on the 23rd of March. The performers are not going to be world famous stars yet, but every bit as good and who knows in a few years you might be able to say I saw them in Woolwich one strange and wonderful night.

Matthew Neel - biography

In 2004 Matthew Neel broke his wrist as the bones began to heal he discovered an alternative, more finger-picked approach to playing the guitar - at times reminiscent of pink moon-era nick drake. the song writing too had a new depth and is perfectly captured on his debut album 'new maps of hell' released on scratchy records in 2010. Matthew is ably supported on guitar by mark knopfler's jobbing guitarist, Luke brightly.

Reviews for 'New Maps of Hell'

'Unique and totally mesmerising, this is an album which proves difficult to turn off' Maverick

'Taking obvious cues from Cat Stevens from start to finish Matthew Neel has successfully set himself apart from the crowd on this far-reaching debut album and has clearly worked hard to redeem the title of the singer/songwriter' Bearded Magazine

'Snappy lyricism and black heart.. a competent and assured debut that promises much for the future' Americana-UK
'Equally diverse and hummable but always accompanied by an undercurrent of the Dark Side.. a confident debut by one to watch' R2 Magazine
'Recalls Ray Davies's finest cynical hours.. a series of unflinching meditations on oblivion' Acoustic Magazine

Bromide - biography

Bromide is London-based, Essex-born, Capri-owning, cat-worshiping, singer-songwriter Simon berridge and anyone he can con (or persuade with money) into playing with him. Press

"ultra-catchy, jangly acoustic pop that reminds you of lloyd cole, teenage fanclub or American music club" Soundsxp.com

"Memorable slices of acoustic whimsy" *** Q magazine

"Mainman Simon Berridge has an ear for a canny tune and a keen lyrical eye for detail. Front that with his Ray-Davies-meets-Lloyd-Cole crooning and you're onto a winner" The Big Issue

"An off-kilter look at the traumas, troubles, and triumphs of love Berridge has an air of a man at ease with his emotions, able to take the hits and still come back fighting for more. 'Looking For Aliens' would have even the most depressed student up on the dance floor stretching their drainpipes. Whilst his take on GBV's 'Game of Pricks' is worthy of the old dog's themselves." Americana-uk.com

"Romping, indie-pop blast with lyrics that recalls the heyday of The Only Ones: 'If you were dead I could let go / Not while you're still breathing though' " The Times

"More hooks than the DIY dept at Home base" Melody Maker

"A bedroom mini classic that harks back to Kevin Ayers, discovers Sonic Youth and has chronic lovesickness to spare' Evening Standard

Joey Herzfeld & his so-called friends - biography

Joey Herzfeld:

"We mix up a lot of style - pre-war German cabaret, French chanson, swing, Klezmer, blues, full-on rock n roll, a dash of prog, country. At a push "cabaret-rock" is the best pithy description. If you're looking for songs about topics so unsexy no-one else will touch them with a barge-pole - senile dementia, the humdrum life of being a teacher plus bonkers flights of fancy, a murderer fleeing to Mexico, the last man on earth hanging eating in a deserted school canteen - we're the band for you."

The Woolwich Grand Theatre is staging a fundraising, quiz and entertainment evening for our friends and supporters. While we're still waiting for council approval over minor issues, we need to put events on and to try out performers, this seems a perfect opportunity to do this. Even though we cannot charge at the door this is a fundraiser so please give generously when the bucket is passed around. These events will happen once a week either on a Wednesday or a Thursday from now on. We have lots of exciting performers we are lining up so please support us and come down, enjoy the evening and have a night out in Woolwich for a change. Your input in establishing our venue is much appreciated so I look forward to seeing you all on Thursday the 3rd.
